Have you ever compared your gas receipt to your grocery receipt?
If you have, you will see that the gas receipt is missing the taxes & fees that we pay each time we purchase gas, whereas the grocery receipt includes them. Except for gas receipts, all other receipts, invoices, and contracts itemize taxes and fees.
I provided a line-item list below of the Taxes & Fees we pay per gallon of gas we purchase. As you can see, the combined total of taxes & fees we pay per gallon of gas is $1.27.
What this means is that we currently pay $1.27 in taxes and fees on each gallon of gas we purchase regardless of the price of gas.
Taxes & Fees:
.51 cents CA Excise Tax
.18 cents Federal Excise Tax
.22 cents Low Carbon Fuel Standard
.24 cents Cap-And-Trade
.10 cents State & Local Sales Tax
.02 cents State Underground Storage Tax

$1.27 The amount each of us pay in taxes and fees on each gallon of gas we purchase.
12 Gallons of Gas x $1.27 = $15.24
$15.24 is the price paid in taxes and fees when you purchase 12 gallons of gas.
12 gallons is the average size of a medium size car gas tank.
I stand for fiscal transparency. I believe that we have a right to know how much we pay in taxes and fees each time we purchase a gallon of gas. With California having the highest gas prices in the country, I believe we need to bring back the requirement of posting taxes and fees at gas stations and place the tax/fee breakdown on gas receipts.
Just like the County of Santa Clara passed an ordinance in 2007 mandating the display of calorie content at fast food restaurants, I am proposing that the County mandate gas taxes/fees be posted at gas stations and on gas receipts.
The gas tax/fee information can be accomplished by providing a QR code on gas receipts.
Having the tax/fee breakdown listed in public view at gas stations and on gas receipts will not lower gas prices; however, it ensures gas taxes/fees are transparent for consumers.
